Pile driving noise induces transient gait disruptions in the longfin squid (Doryteuthis pealeii)

چکیده

Anthropogenic noise is now a prominent pollutant increasing in both terrestrial and marine environments. In the ocean, proliferating offshore windfarms, key renewable energy source, are concern, as their pile driving construction among most intense anthropogenic sound sources. Yet, across taxa, there little information of impacts on organismal fine-scale movement despite its link to individual fitness. Here, we experimentally quantified swimming behavior an abundant squid species ( Doryteuthis pealeii ) vital commercial ecological importance response situ activity multiple temporal spatial scales (thus exposed differing received levels, or noise-doses). Pile induced energetically costly alarm-jetting behaviors (69%) individuals at levels (in zero peak) 112-123 dB re 1 µm s -2 , similar those measured kilometer scale from some wind farm areas. No responses were found comparison site with lower levels. Persistence pattern changes during noise-induced alarm responses, metric addressing energetic effects, lasted up 14 significantly shorter duration than caused by natural conspecific interactions. Despite observing dramatic behavioral initial noise, was no evidence gait over experiment day. These results demonstrate that disrupts movements, but short-lived suggesting windfarm may minimally impact energetics this ecologically taxon. However, further work needed assess potential physiological higher

An Unexpected Diversity of Photoreceptor Classes in the Longfin Squid, Doryteuthis pealeii

Cephalopods are famous for their ability to change color and pattern rapidly for signaling and camouflage. They have keen eyes and remarkable vision, made possible by photoreceptors in their retinas. External to the eyes, photoreceptors also exist in parolfactory vesicles and some light organs, where they function using a rhodopsin protein that is identical to that expressed in the retina. Furt...

The ontogeny of muscle structure and locomotory function in the long-finned squid Doryteuthis pealeii.

Understanding the extent to which changes in muscle form and function underlie ontogenetic changes in locomotory behaviors and performance is important in understanding the evolution of musculoskeletal systems and also the ecology of different life stages. We explored ontogenetic changes in the structure, myosin heavy chain (MHC) expression and contractile properties of the circular muscles tha...

Ink from longfin inshore squid, Doryteuthis pealeii, as a chemical and visual defense against two predatory fishes, summer flounder, Paralichthys dentatus, and sea catfish, Ariopsis felis.

Chemical and visual defenses are used by many organisms to avoid being approached or eaten by predators. An example is inking molluscs-including gastropods such as sea hares and cephalopods such as squid, cuttlefish, and octopus-which release a colored ink upon approach or attack. Previous work showed that ink can protect molluscs through a combination of chemical, visual, and other effects. In...

Eye development and photoreceptor differentiation in the cephalopod Doryteuthis pealeii.

Photoreception is a ubiquitous sensory ability found across the Metazoa, and photoreceptive organs are intricate and diverse in their structure. Although the morphology of the compound eye in Drosophila and the single-chambered eye in vertebrates have elaborated independently, the amount of conservation within the 'eye' gene regulatory network remains controversial, with few taxa studied. To be...

Adverse Effects of Ocean Acidification on Early Development of Squid (Doryteuthis pealeii)

Anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) is being absorbed into the ocean, altering seawater chemistry, with potentially negative impacts on a wide range of marine organisms. The early life stages of invertebrates with internal and external aragonite structures may be particularly vulnerable to this ocean acidification. Impacts to cephalopods, which form aragonite cuttlebones and statoliths, are of c...
